Sometimes a story strikes a chord in you. This book did this to me. I see the flaws but I must say I really enjoyed reading it.The story is about one of the trickiest relationships you can have: to your mother-in-law. Lucy and Ollie meet at work and fall in love. When he takes her to his parents she is eager to meet his mother. Lucy lost her own mother when she was a child so she hopes to find a mother figure to fill the gap. She is eager to please but Diana, Ollies mum, is a very cold and distant person. The relationship between them stays cool for most of the time.The book starts with Lucy and Ollie getting informed by the police that Diana is dead. She presumably committed suicide. The story is told alternating by Lucy and Diana over the course of several years. While Lucy lacks a bit of a personality Diana is a very impressive character. She is a bit social awkward. I found it very interesting to see how she described a situations while Lucy got a very different impression. As a child or young person we tend to think that adults are content and know everything. Even when we grow up we think that about our parents. Here we see that Diana is not at all like Lucy thinks for many years. Diana is a bit different and life made her hard but she is caring and has her own way of looking at things. She also has her flaws and knows about them but she is also just a human being and can’t get out of her skin. I found her character very well developed. All the other characters fall a bit flat in her shadow. But still the family dynamic worked very well.This book is a kind of thriller, but more on the slower side. But even more it is a family drama. I noticed that the book is a bit slow on the thriller side but it captured me with the family interactions and of course with the character of Diana. I enjoyed this book more than I thought.

The author tells the story of a mother-in-law / daugher-in-law relationship, with all the attendant expectations, hopes and disappointments, and weaving in the back story of both characters, which gives insight into what shaped them, and what drives them to think and act as they do. I liked how the story was told, chapter by chapter, from the two different POVs, and the time hops kept me on my toes and engaged with the development of the story.To be honest, I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. I found the first half a bit slower going, but once I was into it, I zipped through it because I wanted to know what happened. The twist was perhaps not all that surprising, but the home truths the author packaged into the story were an unexpected bonus.

I’ve seen quite a few books going around recently about mother-in-laws, some lackluster. But The Mother-in-Law was masterfully written and kept me fully engaged from start to finish. Told through both Diana and Lucy’s perspectives, “past” and “present,” a picture of both their lives, and their complicated relationship, is painted. It keeps going to the end of the book when I turn a page! Very frustrating. The book is well-written but for $14.99 it is a gyp since Amazon messed up the Kindle edition!!

This was the first book I had read by this author, came across this by chance. So impressed! Verywell written, couldn't put it down once I started reading. All the characters connected with a who done it feel!Highly recommended! Just onto my second book written by the above, have become a fan.

How enticing is the title of Sally Hepworth’s new novel. THE MOTHER-IN-LAW. If you pick it up based on name alone, you will not be disappointed. We’re talking a hard to please, stern, no-nonsense type, no woman is good enough for her son. A future daughter-in-law, especially the kind who has no mother of her own, is looking for a little bit of warmth and a solid welcome to the family, but this Mrs. isn’t doling any kindness out.There is an unexpected death. The MIL. She said she had cancer, but her suicide note, and subsequent autopsy don’t add up. She rubbed some the wrong way. Did someone rub her out?I started and finished this book in the same day. I was positively glued. Just when you think you know what’s going to happen, you don’t. The best kind of reading.

A great relaxing read, with enough mysteries to keep me turning then pages between pauses to reflect on my own relationships. I will recommend this book to my friends.
